Young Workers

Are you hiring young workers or students this summer?
Here are a few things you should know....

  • Young workers are much more likely to get injured on the first few days of work than any other category of worker. Why?
    • They often lack the experience to make solid decisions about their own safety and that of their co-workers.
    • They are eager to please and impress, and may feel insecure about their position.
    • They think they are invincible!
    • Most don't understand their rights, roles and responsibilities in the workplace as they relate to safety.
    • In Ontario, only 40% of young workers receive health and safety training before starting their job or within their first week of work
  • The Ministry of Labour is "blitzing" workplaces to make sure employers are taking every reasonable precaution to keep their inexperienced workers safe.

What can you do to keep these workers safe??

  • Provide a general and job specific safety orientation BEFORE you put them to work
  • Make sure they understand that your organization values safe practices
  • Give them proper supervision
  • Encourage them to Learn, Participate, Recognize & Ask Questions

Resources:

The internet is full of good resources to help in the training of your young workers. Here are some excellent resources you may want to check out:

  • Health and Safety 101 is an e-course developed by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario, to provide workers 24 years old and younger with important health and safety information. This is a great on-line training course for your workers and also provides a 36 page resource manual.
  • The Infrastructure Health & Safety Association has a young worker publication that is worth downloading and passing along to your supervisors.
  • The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety has a comprehensive web site dedicated to young workers.
  • Passport to Safety is another great on-line training tool that will issue a certificate of completion which can be kept on file as proof of knowledge or understanding.  FREE Passports are accessible to any Quinte high school student through their counsellors.  Employers contact us to purchase your passports.
